Coimbatore: The Highways Department with the help of Revenue, Police and Corporation officials commenced a massive drive to remove encroachments from Karumbukkadai to Aathuppalam on Saturday.

The demolition squads of the Highways and Corporation teams were pressed into service clearing a number of shops from Karumbukkadai.

The motorable space has been narrowed down in Karumbukkadai area because of the rampant encroachments. The structures demolished on Saturday included party offices, shops and a number of concrete civil structures.

As a matter of precaution, huge police reinforcements led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (Law and Order-South), L. Balaji Saravanan were posted in the area. Tahsildar P. Subramanian oversaw the drive.

The authorities plan to sustain the drive for two more days to ensure that the encroachments are being removed on either side.Once the drive was over, the road would be widened removing the traffic bottleneck, the officials said.
