OSR land worth Rs 200 cr seized

Oct. 3: The city corporation retrieved OSR (Open Space Reserve) land worth an estimated Rs 200 crore at 14 areas in the city in a single day on Sunday. Civic officials, led by mayor M. Subramanian, as a part of an ongoing drive, retrieved 52 grounds of OSR land in zone VIII comprising T Nagar, Teynampet, Virugamba-kkam and Salgiramam.

Among the retrieved lot, eight and a half grounds belonged to hotel company Hyatt, which shares the neighbourhood with DMK headquarters Anna Arivalayam on Anna Salai.
The civic body has given a week’s time to the firm to clear its belongings lying idle in the retrieved land.

Mr Subramanian told mediapersons after Sunday’s drive that land worth Rs 3,500 crore had been retrieved and subsequently parks and playgrounds were being developed in the retrieved portions in the city over the past four years. Last week, about 136 grounds of OSR land worth Rs 300 crore were retrieved from 26 areas.

Tenders have been floated for the development of parks and playgrounds in the said areas, Mr Subramanian pointed out. Similar exercise will be taken up in zone IV and V, where officials are currently scrutinising documents and surveying lands, he said, adding that the corporation is fully prepared to handle the ensuing monsoon season.

Illegal:Corporation personnel removing the encroachment in Gandhi Market at Palayamkottai on Monday.

TIRUNELVELI: Following complaints from the public, the Corporation personnel removed encroachments at Gandhi Market, Palayamkottai on Monday. Since some of the traders were stocking rice bags, vegetables baskets and other commodities on the passage in front their shops, it badly hampered the free movement of the buyers visiting the market. After receiving complaints in this regard, Commissioner N. Subbaiyan ordered the removal of encroachments. Subsequently a group of corporation personnel removed the materials kept in front of the shops, triggering altercation between the traders and the officials.
