More unauthorised structures removed

A canal was filled to build a godown and another building

An unauthorised building at Kurinji Nagar near Selvapuram in Coimbatore being removed on Thursday.

COIMBATORE: In its continuing drive against unauthorised constructions across the city, the Coimbatore Corporation demolished on Thursday two buildings that had come up on what was once a canal but later turned into a road.

The special demolition squad of the civic body razed a 1,000 sq ft godown and a 600 sq ft building, one part of which was meant to be a godown and the other a residence.

Using hollow blocks, these buildings had been built on an area that was still classified in Revenue Department records as a canal. But, over a period of time, it was used as a pathway between two residential colonies.

Canal

Quoting people in the locality, an official in the squad said they had apparently turned the canal into a road because it was not taking water into any tank.

The site, however, was located near the Selva Chinthamani tank, one of the water bodies that would be rejuvenated under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. One of the buildings demolished on Thursday had been constructed right in the middle of this path. Its removal restored the link between Kurinji Garden and Thirunagar.

The official said notices had been served on the owners of the buildings, asking them to remove the structures in a week.

The Corporation and the Revenue Department removed the structures as the owners did not respond to the notices.

The Corporation and the Revenue Department were identifying unauthorised constructions on Government lands and water bodies and removing them.

A similar eviction was done on 15 cents a couple of days ago along a water body near A.K.S. Nagar off Thadagam Road, he said.

Cost to be claimed from building owners

CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation will remove flex materials used for advertising on the walls across the city if they are not taken off voluntarily.

Mayor M. Subramanian said following the ban on hoardings in the city, advertisers have adopted a new method of using flex materials for advertisements.

If the materials are not removed, the civic agency would remove them and claim the cost from the building owners. It would initiate action against those who refuse to pay the charges.

The civic agency would also withdraw the special wards system at three of its maternity hospitals in Saidapet, Mirsahibpet and Perumalpet. Officials said the hospitals had one room each for special ward.

In view of the low patronage for the special wards, for which a fee of Rs.3,000 is charged, and the need for more space for ward expansion plans, the Corporation decided to withdraw the system.

The Mayor said issues pertaining to tax arrears could now be resolved at zonal offices instead of Ripon Building. Complaints of problems in online services would be looked into.

Libraries

The Corporation would spend Rs.1.25 crore and set up libraries in 67 Chennai High Schools and Chennai Higher Secondary Schools. Each library would be provided with 200 books and a committee would select the titles.

The council also approved that Rs.6 lakh be spent towards the purchase of books. The number of books would be increased every year, officials said.

CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation on Wednesday demolished two structures on its properties on Walltax Road to reclaim them following the expiry of the lease period.

Officials of the civic body said the properties were occupied by commercial establishments.

The area of demolished buildings was 600 sq. ft each. The decision to retrieve the lands was taken as the lease period had expired over three decades ago.

Besides business establishments, a few residential buildings have also come up on the Corporation lands spread over nearly two-km stretch of the road between the subway near the Central Railway Station and Moolakothalam, the officials said.

The civic body had carried out similar operation about two weeks ago and pulled down two other buildings.

On the traders' complaint about the demolition without prior intimation, officials said notices were issued twice.
