Inconvenience:Road users find it very difficult to travel on Brough Road and many other parts in Panneer Selvam Park area as hawkers have occupied both the sides.

ERODE: The Panneer Selvam Park area witnesses chaotic traffic every day, thanks to hawkers who have occupied every bit of space on both sides of the roads and streets.

Eateries, vegetable and cloth vendors among others continue to hinder traffic flow on the busy streets, Brough Road, Manikoondu and a number of inner streets in the Park area.

Some of the shops have even extended their product display up to the road by constructing concrete structures on it.

Vehicle users are facing a lot of difficulties while travelling particularly during the peak hours. The police personnel are also finding it difficult to regulate the traffic flow every day.

Heavy vehicles and buses are operated on many of the roads in the area. The buses can move only at a snail's pace due to the encroachments, they say.

Pedestrians are the worst affected as walking in the Park area particularly during the peak morning and evening hours gives a nightmarish experience to them.

Officials at the State highways, Revenue Department and the Erode Corporation continue to turn a blind eye over this issue despite repeated representations.

Efforts are taken to remove encroachments only when we put pressure on the officials concerned, a senior citizen points out.

Officials on a few occasions took steps to evict the encroachers and demolish the deviated structures. But after a couple of days, the vendors managed to set up their shops again.

Opposition

We face strong opposition when we try to remove the encroachments. The vendors often come with the support of political parties preventing us from removing their shops completely, a senior official in the civic body says.

People urged the authorities concerned to bring in concrete efforts to remove the encroachments and ensure smooth traffic flow on the town roads.

The hawkers should be given a separate place to set up their shops so that their livelihood is also protected, they added.

Monsoon over, civic body focus on prime OSR land

December 17th, 2010

Dec. 16: The city corporation, busy battling the monsoon problems over the past two months, has now shifted its focus to reclamation of open space reserve (OSR) properties. Teams of vigilance officials are working overtime to ascertain the building plans of prime properties in posh Nungambakkam and Kilpauk.

According to vigilance department sources, a detailed report on OSR land available in Kilpauk and Nungambakkam has already been submitted to the corporation commissioner. Subsequently, the drive will continue in Triplicane and Saidapet zones and field officers have been asked to collect details related to properties with OSR land for acquisition.

When contacted, mayor M. Subramanian said the civic body had been actively reclaiming OSR land till August but the drive was put on hold for short time after the monsoon struck Chennai, forcing the corporation to rain alert mode. With the rainy season coming to an end, the drive to retrieve OSR land will be intensified.

So far the corporation has reclaimed properties worth over `3,000 crore, he said. According to Ripon Building sources, the vigilance department of the corporation has been entrusted to prepare a report on the status of OSR land in Chennai.

In the meantime, civic officials on Thursday acquired a 5,400 sq. ft plot in Velachery, which had been fraudulently sold with forged documents. The corporation also lodged a police complaint against seven people who were involved in the fraudulent land deal.

CHENNAI: A land earmarked for a park by the Chennai Corporation and a road in Velachery that were allegedly sold by land grabbers using forged documents have been recovered.

The market value of the land, measuring 5,400 sqft, is put at Rs.2.25 crore, said a official.

The civic body has asked the Registration Department to invalidate the registration of the documents and has advised it to take measures to prevent such land registrations using forged documents.

The Corporation also informed the officials concerned to deny planning permission for any construction on the land. Directions have been issued to construct a wall around the land.

It has recommended criminal proceedings against S.Sankari, A.V. Shanmugam, Mu.Varadaraj and Ma.Kottaisami for grabbing the road area of 1,800 sq ft in the same locality (survey no.317/1A1, lay out 16/73 in ward 153 of Adyar zone).
