TIRUCHI: The Tiruchi Corporation took up a major encroachment eviction drive along the West Boulevard Road and Big Bazaar Street in the city on Tuesday. The day long operation, which commenced at around 9 in the morning, was carried out amidst heavy police security.

A second hand book seller, M.Murugesan (63) caused a flutter after threatening to commit self-immolation, protesting the eviction of his roadside shop along the West Boulevard. Police foiled the attempt and took him into custody. A case was registered against him.

Mr.Murugesan was reported to have made similar threats during eviction operations taken up by the Corporation a few years ago.

Unauthorised structures put up by over 20 shop keepers, encroaching on public space, were removed along the two roads during the operation conducted under the supervision of City Engineer Raja Mohamed and Executive Engineer S.Arunachalam. Apart from Corporation earthmovers and workers, a strong posse of policemen were deployed during the operation. The eviction drive comes in the wake of certain changes in traffic movement on the West Boulevard to be implemented by the city police from Wednesday.

Besides, the Corporation has also planned to widen the entire West Boulevard Road stretch, with road medians, at a cost of over Rs.3 crore, sources said.

Stern action:Corporation officials removing encroachments from a reserved site at Alamu Nagar in the city on Wednesday.

COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore Corporation, following a Madras High Court order, took possession on Wednesday of 25 of the 51 cents of reserved site in Alamu Nagar.

A Division Bench of Justice D. Murugesan and Justice Vinod K. Sharma paved way for the Corporation's takeover by dismissing appeals by the promoters, who had challenged a common order of the court.

Common order

In the common order, dated January 4, 2010, the court had allowed a petition by the Alamu Nagar Residents' Welfare Association questioning the decision of the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department to accord permission to change the use of land from public purpose to housing plots in respect of the land situated in survey number 1279 at Alamu Nagar.

The promoters had purchased the lands measuring 4,250 sq ft, 3,200 sq ft and 3,406 sq ft in the area.

In the aforementioned petition, the association had also questioned the direction of the State Government to change the usage of land from public purpose to housing plot of land with survey number 1278.

Resolution

In the common order the court had dismissed the second writ petition, filed by the appellants themselves.

They had questioned a resolution of the Coimbatore Corporation to takeover a land measuring 20,973 sq ft at Alamu Nagar.

The court said “once permission is accorded and in that permission if a specified area is earmarked for public purpose, even the planning authority shall not have power to exempt that land for being put to use for any other purpose. In that context, the State Government also cannot have any jurisdiction to alter the conditions imposed in the layout, whereby certain lands are earmarked as open space to be used for public purposes.”

Corporation reclaims Rs 5cr land from hotel

CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation on Monday reclaimed land valued at Rs5 crore, hitherto encroached upon by a hotel on Spurtank Road in Chetpet.

Staff of corporation's Nungambakkam zone, with support from city police, pulled down the encroached portion following a directive of the Madras high court.

The hotelier had built a juice stall and toilets in the one ground land, which belonged to the corporation. "After the standing counsels of the corporation managed to vacate the stay given to the hotel, the zonal staff immediately swung into action and engaged two trucks and a loader to remove the debris," said a corporation official.

At least 30 workers assisted the corporation in pulling down the encroachment and establishing its ownership by placing a notice board.

There has been a constant move by the corporation in reclaiming its lands encroached upon by private individuals across the city. In the last four years, about 80 acres of land were taken over by civic body in areas like Shenoy Nagar, Madambakkam, Anna Nagar, Sastri Nagar, Saidapet, Teynampet and Park Town. The drive would continue in the coming months as well, officials said.

BICYCLE STAND: Mayor M Subramanian on Monday inaugurated bicycle stands built in corporation-run higher secondary schools at the cost of Rs1.11 crore.

At least 24 schools will be benefited in various zones. He also launched the distribution of biscuits to students appearing for public examinations during this academic year. As many as 13,000 students who attend special classes in the evening hours will benefit from this scheme, which will cost the exchequer Rs49 lakh, Subramanian said.
