MADURAI: The Madurai Corporation on Wednesday launched an eviction drive on the city's arterial roads. Fruits and other articles worth Rs.1 lakh were seized by officials of Town Planning section during the drive.

The Corporation Commissioner, S. Sebastine, issued a warning that all shops and advertisement hoardings kept on the roads and platforms causing hindrance to traffic movement and common man would be removed. Besides, a fine would be imposed on the violators.

The officials conducted the encroachment removal drive in the south and north zones following receipt of several complaints, Mr. Sebastine said in a statement.

The officials said that fruit baskets spread out on the platforms in the Periyar bus stand causing inconvenience to the passengers were removed. The belongings of unauthorised fruit vendors who had encroached upon roads in Simmakkal, Yanaikkal and Vakkil New Street were seized.

The statement said that many hoardings kept for advertising various products for the Deepavali sale were pulled down. The drive against encroachments also targeted the road side flex boards, banners and temporary sheds.

Assistant Town Planning Officer, Palanichamy, and Building Inspectors, Narayanan and Elangovan, led the teams.

Bill boards removed

SALEM: On instructions from Corporation Commissioner Dr. K.S. Palanisamy, employees removed various bill boards, which had been remaining at Ammapet zone for long.

According to the officials, many bill boards remained despite repeated reminders from the civic body. Hence on Tuesday, the workers removed 20 boards.

The initiative would continue in other parts of the city, they said.

Nov. 9: The Madras high court on Tuesday directed Corporation of Chennai to file a report regarding the number of unauthorised hoardings erected, their removal and prosecution of offenders who illegally erected digital billboards in the city.

A contempt application filed by activist ‘Traffic’ Ramasamy came up for hearing before a division bench comprising Justices D. Murugesan and Vinod K. Sharma, and additional advocate general P. Wilson submitted that steps are taken to bring in a comprehensive legislation on the matter relating to digital banners and hoardings by amending Chapter XII-A of the Chennai City Municipal Corporation Act.

But he said this could not be done in the winter session of the Assembly because of its short duration and the legislation would be tabled during in the next session.

Recording the submission, the bench directed the corporation to file a report regarding action taken by the civic body on illegal hoardings by furnishing details of the number of billboards erected, their removal and the cases against people who erected the hoardings.

The bench posted further hearing of the contempt application to November 23. By an order dated January 29, 2010, the court had directed the authorities to take necessary steps to remove all unauthorised hoardings, to prevent such billboards from being put up and to take action against violators.
