Rs 120 crore for new township near Madurai

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Sunday allocated Rs 120 crore for the first phase of work to establish a satellite township about 15 km from Madurai. The first phase will entail the creation of basic amenities like roads, drains, sewerage, streetlights among others.

Jayalalithaa has also ordered the use of prefab technology to speed up the completion of the housing project taken up by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board at Sholinganallur in Chennai. The prefab method makes quicker completion of construction projects possible by removing the necessity to construct buildings entirely at the sites, by pre-fabricating pillars, beams, stairs, ceilings, etc. in factories and transporting them to construction sites for final assembly using mortar.

A statement by the government said Jayalalithaa had ordered the use of this method to cut down on the time taken to complete the construction of 1,500 housing units in Sholinganallur, and gave the administrative sanction for the allocation of Rs 39.51 crore for the project.

She also approved allocation of Rs 120 crore for the first phase of work on the township that is being built by the State at Thoppur and Uchampatti villages near Madurai Airport.
