Jayalalithaa gives administrative approval for housing schemes in Madurai, Sholinganallur

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa has given administrative approval for two housing schemes — a satellite township in Madurai and construction of 1,500 flats at Sholinganallur near Chennai.

According to a statement from the state government, the chief minister has sanctioned Rs 120 crore towards establishing an integrated township in Madurai. The township is being developed over 587 acres of land near Madurai airport. It is located about 15km from Madurai in the villages of Thoppur and Ucchapatti, off Madurai-Tiruneveli four-lane highway.

The satellite township would have 19,500 plots, of which 14,300 plots would be earmarked for the low-income group, 2,500 plots for the middle-income group and 750 plots for the high-income group. The township project would be carried out with funds from the Tamil Nadu Housing Board. Jayalalithaa had announced the satellite township project during the budget session of the assembly in April.

In the satellite township scheme, the first phase would include construction of small bridges and setting up of basic amenities such as drinking water, drainage facilities and rainwater harvesting, the statement said.

The chief minister has also given administrative approval of Rs 379.51 crore towards construction of 1,500 flats to be built at Sholinganallur using pre-fab technology.
