Chennai: Chief minister J. Jayalalithaa has accorded administrative sanction of Rs 120 crore to facilitate the execution of the first phase works towards the creation of an integrated satellite township on the Madurai-Tirunelveli four-lane road at Thoppur and Ucchampatti village.

The project, to come up on 586.86 acres, will address the increasing needs of the growing population, particularly their housing demands, besides involving the development of urban areas.
Keeping the priorities in mind, the state government, led by Jayalalithaa, has been taking several steps to fulfil the housing requirements of the people, especially those from the middle-class and poor sections.

The township will have 19,500 plots of which 14,300 would be allotted to low-income groups, 2,500 for middle-income groups, 750 for high-income groups and 1,950 for economically backward sections.

Jayalalithaa announced the construction of schools, commercial complexes, a police station, a post office, a fire station and a primary health centre at the township where initial works such as providing drinking water facilities, roads, drainage, small bridges and other infrastructure would be taken up.

She also directed officials to use state-of-the-art, pre-fab technology in the housing projects. Pillars, staircases and roofs produced in factories should be put to use after water curing, as per technology. They would be installed using machines.

One of the advantages of this technology is that it reduces the duration of construction. For instance, a 24-storeyed complex can be completed within 24 months using this technology. The Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) will employ this technology for constructing its complex at Sholinganallur.

A sum of Rs 379.51 crore has been sanctioned by the chief minister for the purpose.

Next: Rs 287 cr allotted for irrigation systems.
