‘Corporation complexes to have 1,149 shops'


CHENNAI: Chennai Corporation is constructing three shopping complexes with 1,149 shops for street vendors, Mayor M Subramanian said on Thursday.

This is part of an initiative taken to decongest commercial areas, he added.

After inspecting the ongoing construction work of one of its three commercial complexes at T Nagar here, Subramanian said, “At an estimated cost of Rs 5.78 crore, the civic body is constructing three shopping complexes at T Nagar, Ayanavaram and Washermenpet that would accommodate 1,149 street vendors.” While construction at Washermenpet is almost complete, that at Ayanavaram would be completed by March and the one at T Nagar by April, he said. The three-storey commercial complex at T Nagar is coming up at a cost of Rs 4.3 crore with a plinth area of over 43,03 square feet. More than 690 platform vendors selected from T Nagar area have been allotted shops in the complex. It has three lifts and 72 public conveniences.

The complex at Ayanavaram is coming up at Palavoyal Market Road with ground and first floor at a cost of Rs 1.23 crore. Over 330 roadside vendors have been allotted shops here.

The facility at Washermenpet is being constructed at a cost of Rs 25 lakh with 125 shops.
