Civic body is constructing 280 shops to boost revenue in city.

Coimbatore Corporation is constructing 40 shops, each measuring 320 sq.ft., at Shastri Maidan. It had prepared two estimates for the shops. The total expenditure for the same is a little over Rs. 1 crore.

The civic body has tabled a resolution before the AIADMK-majority Council, which passed the same with very little debate.

The explanation offered for constructing shops in the Maidan was that the Corporation need to augment its revenue. R.S. Puram being a prime commercial area, the shops there would fetch revenue. The civic body was constructing around 280 shops across the city for this purpose.

According to estimates, the Corporation planned to boost its revenue by Rs. 2.80 crore a year from the shops.

Sources within the ruling AIADMK said that the Corporation constructing shops on the playground — where hundreds of children spent hours during weekends and holidays — for commercial gain could not be digested. It had got its priorities wrong — revenue over public welfare.

The Corporation Committee on Education, Parks and Playground that functioned between 2006 and 2011 was also of the same opinion.

It passed a resolution saying that the Corporation should not let out the playground even on rent for circuses or fairs, which for days together deprived students of play area. But now the Corporation had chosen to erect permanent structures and that too well within the playground and this has caused consternation.

Sources in the know of the developments pointed out the previous Council evicting a tennis academy that was functioning illegally within Shastri Maidan to highlight the contrast that this time, though, the civic body itself had become the encroacher.

Who would bell the cat, the sources asked. They pointed out that the Corporation was constructing such shops at school grounds, school campuses in R.S. Puram and also other parts of the city.

A member of the present Committee on Education, Parks and Playgrounds said she was surprised to know that the Corporation was constructing shops on the Maidan. Deputy Commissioner Coimbatore Corporation S. Sivarasu said that the civic body had not taken away what rightfully belonged to the children.

It was only on the southern side that the Corporation had utilised a portion of the land. This would in no way prevent children from utilising the ground to the fullest extent.

Equipment likely to be commissioned in 3 months, can make 3,000 pieces an hour.

The much-anticipated move to supply chapathis in the 200 Amma canteens in the city got a boost with the Chennai Corporation Council approving a plan to mechanise the process. The commissioning of equipment worth Rs. 4 crore will enable a supply of 4 lakh chapathis a day. The equipment is likely to be commissioned in three months, in time for September, when at least 2,000 chapathis and dal or kurma will be supplied from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in each of the canteens. A plate of two chapathis will cost Rs. 3

The civic body also decided to create a separate department for managing Amma canteens. Officials of the Corporation’s revenue and health department have been shouldering the responsibility of running the canteens.

The decision to mechanise Amma canteens has been taken as the six women at work in each canteen will not be upto the task of carrying out the work manually. While they will be able to make only 50 chapathis per hour, the machines will have the capacity to manufacture nearly 3,000.

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had recently announced the expansion of the menu in the canteens with pongal, rice preparations and chapathi being added to the list of items served. Currently, idli is sold for one rupee, sambar rice for Rs. 5 and curd rice for Rs 3. Breakfast is supplied from 7 a.m. to noon. Lunch is served till 3 p.m.

The canteens will soon start serving pongal for breakfast and tamarind rice or curry leaf rice during lunch for Rs 5.

Mayor Saidai Duraisamy asked officials to commission chapathi-making machines within the shortest possible time. The Corporation’s ambitious project aims at providing healthy food at reasonable prices to residents living in slums, daily labourers, drivers, load-men and migrant workers. A number of councillors requested the Mayor to include pickle with curd rice at the council meeting on Wednesday. The Mayor rejected the request citing health concerns.

Many councillors noted the rise in popularity of Amma Canteens over the past few months. The canteens were inaugurated by the Chief Minister in February. Over 2,400 women belonging to self-help groups in the city have been cooking, serving and managing the 200 canteens in the city. The women have been selected through the Corporation for Development of Women.

Streets in the city are all set to become garbage-free as the City Municipal Corporation is getting ready to induct vehicles and bins worth Rs. 5.41 crore into service next week.

Under the Integrated Urban Development Mission (IUDM) 2012-13, the civic body has placed orders for procuring 24 vehicles, including backhoe excavator, refuse compactor vehicles, light Multirole vehicle, 200 compactor bins and 115 dumper bins.

“Most of the vehicles and bins have arrived and the rest would arrive shortly,” Mayor S. Soundappan told The Hindu .

He added that it would give garbage collection and disposal a big boost. The city would become a model for solid waste management.

These vehicles would collect around 500 tonne garbage every day and supply it to the Salem City Integrated Waste Management Private Limited plant in Chettichavadi for processing.

Officials said that they are planning to induct the vehicles for garbage removal during night hours and keep the city clean.

By inducting the new vehicles, the civic body could save several lakh rupees through fuel saving and easy transportation to the processing plant.

Officials added that this is a major purchase by the civic body after it was upgraded as Corporation. It is an effort to make the city garbage-free.

“The present tractors and lorries that are poorly-maintained consume much fuel and their carrying capacity is also low.

“The new vehicles would replace the existing fleet of vehicles and improve the solid waste management system in the city,” they added.
