Status check: Mayor M.Subramanian inspects work on the Rangarajapuram flyover in Chennai.

CHENNAI: Two of the three arms of the upcoming Rangarajapuram flyover will be opened for traffic next month. One-way traffic will be permitted - from Railway Border Road to Bazullah Road. The third arm will be completed in March.

The stretch of the flyover that would be inaugurated in January is 609.24 metres long. This would help private vehicles to a large extent and is expected to help divert traffic during the repair work of the Kodambakkam bridge.

Work on the ramp towards the Kodambakkam station side would be completed in 15 days.

The 962-metre-long flyover, being constructed at a cost of Rs.23.76 crore, has a Y shape design.

The arm towards Bazullah Road is 264 metres long and the Rangarajapuram side is 303 metres long. The arm on the side of Kodambakkam railway station is 297 metres. So far, work on 20 deck slabs is over.

Demand met : Works have commenced for the construction of a sewage treatment plant at the Erode Government Hospital -

ERODE: Works for the construction of a new sewage treatment plant at the Erode Government Hospital have begun recently.

The State government had sanctioned Rs. 1.35 crore for the construction of the plant with a capacity to treat over 3.65 kilo litres of water per day.

The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board is the implementing agency for the project. The board will also take care of the operation and maintenance of the plant and the State government will pay the maintenance charges to the board.

The establishment of a sewage treatment facility in Erode government hospital is a long pending demand. People from Erode, Namakkal and Tiruppur districts depend on the hospital for their healthcare needs. The hospital, which has a bed capacity of around 600, gets more than 2,500 outpatients a day.

The hospital administration now discharges water coming from sinks, toilets and bathrooms into the storm water drains of the Erode Corporation without treating it.

After people expressed serious concern over this, the hospital administration had submitted a proposal for the establishment of the sewage treatment plant and received the approval a few months ago.

“The establishment of the treatment plant will enable the administration to enhance the sanitary conditions on the hospital premises to a greater extent,” Hospital Medical Superintendent R. Krishnakumar said.

The project is expected to be completed within March 2011.
