NHAI lays Rs 4 crore footpath on Girivalam

TIRUVANNAMALAI: The Highways Department has laid a 5.2-km footpath along the entire stretch of the highway from Chengam road junction to Abaya Mandalam for the benefit of thousands of devotees who would walk the 14-km Girivalam path around the Annamalaiar hill on the Karthigai Deepam day on Sunday.

According to a highway official the work on footpath with cement tile flooring at an estimated cost of Rs 4 crore began in September and was expected to be completed before the Deepam festival.

The remaining 1.2-km distance would be completed in a month, he added. The footpath has come as a boon for the devotees.

Rajalakshmi (65) of Thirukovilur, who has been taking part in the Girivalam for more than 20 years, said that the footpath would help the pilgrims to have a safe journey as they trek through the Tiruvannamalai-Bangalore highway which would always be busy with movement of heavy vehicles.

In addition, the potholes were also being filled up and just a few more remain to be covered, the official said.  While the work had almost been finished within the Tiruvannamalai Municipality limit, the 700-m Chengam road was still in a bad shape.

The delay has been attributed to the unfinished Underground Drainage (UGD) works.

The 11th hour initiative of the municipality to fill those pits with mud with a solid concrete base has been affected in the heavy rains this week.

Despite these efforts, public doubt if the road would be able to withstand the prevailing weather conditions.

‘Expedite UGD works’

Director of Municipal Administration P Senthil Kumar urged the Tiruvannamalai Municipality and Tamilnadu Water And Drainage (TWAD) board to speed up the ongoing Underground Drainage (UGD) works on Chengam Road here on Wednesday, after inspecting the ongoing UGD works and the construction of the sewage water treatment plant.

He also reviewed temporary bus stands, electricity connectivity, lighting, toilet facilities and water supply made for the devotees ahead of the Deepam celebration on Sunday.

New facility:Municipal office under construction in Manapparai.

MANAPPARAI: Work on the construction of new office premises for the Manapparai municipality, undertaken on an outlay of Rs. 75 lakh, is progressing at a fast pace and is expected to be completed shortly.

The expeditious execution of the project was made possible following the wake of the utilisation of the municipality's own land of 5,000 square feet on the Madurai road, a prime location in the town. The spacious first floor of the full-fledged facility will be allotted for the council hall where the local body's meetings will be held. All the other units and sections will be housed on the ground floor, official sources said.

The present municipal building was constructed way back in the 1930s when Manapparai was a panchayat union. The local body is yet to take a decision on using this old building, located at a stone's throw away from the busy bus stand, after shifting to the new premises.

The local residents expect the municipality to use the old office site for the expansion of the bus stand. This expectation is justified going by the fact that the bus stand is totally inadequate, neither accommodating the buses nor providing comfort to the travelling public. The Municipal Council has already favoured the move for the expansion of the bus stand, indicating the urgent need for providing minimum amenities to the passengers.

Gasifier unit

Yet another facility fast coming up in the town is a gasifier unit being set up by the municipality in its crematorium. This is coming up on an outlay of Rs. 45 lakh and the works are progressing, sources said.
