Anna Nagar cycle track project yet to take off

CHENNAI: Two months have passed since the city corporation’s announcement to setup a dedicated cycle track facility in Anna Nagar.

But works are yet to begin and authorities claim that they are waiting for the final report to be submitted by the Chennai City Connect, the consultant for the project.

Mayor M Subramanian had announced that the project would be completed in a fortnight since its announcement.

“Consultants made an impressive presentation following which they were asked to conduct a detailed inspection and submit a final report. The works will begin once their report is submitted,” said J Attlee, Superintendent Engineer in the Corporation.

However, speaking to Express, Raj Cherubal, co-ordinator of Chennai City Connect, clarified that the final report would be submitted to the authorities within a week.

“In order to maintain the quality we had to spend some extra time in researching and inspecting the measures that need to be taken,” said Raj.

“We can’t design and plan the cycle track exclusively. By doing this, it may later be misused for other purposes like parking spaces. Hence we have designed an integrated plan with exclusive tracks for pedestrians, cycles, parking and fast-moving traffic,” he said.

“We are being careful in our design to separate the fast-moving vehicle section from the cycle tracks and pedestrian paths. Hence we are trying to place parking lots and greenery in a strategic manner so that they act as buffers between the cycle tracks and fast moving vehicle tracks to ensure safety,” Raj said.

A study conducted by the Chennai City Connect along with Institution for Transportation and Development Policy had found that 7,000 of the 33,000 school students in the locality used bicycles to commute to school. “We expect more students to take up cycling provided we give them a safe environment to commute,” he added.

The cycle track will be established along the 14-km stretch in Anna Nagar on a trial basis. While eight-km stretch of arterial roads would be covered for the pilot project, interior roads of six-km distance would get the track.

Work on the 45-year-old structure at Kodambakkam will be completed in a year

The Kodambakkam bridge is one of the crucial links to west Chennai localities.

CHENNAI: The work to strengthen the 45-year-old Kodambakkam bridge began on Thursday.

It is being strengthened at a cost of Rs.4.74 crore and the project will be completed in a year, Mayor M. Subramanian said after launching the work.

The bridge, which is 623 metres long and 12.8 metres wide, is an important link to several localities in west Chennai and the suburbs. Similar works to restore and strengthen 10 bridges and subways in various parts of the city are under way, at a cost of Rs.8.39 crore, he added.

Micro concrete would be used to repair the Kodambakkam Bridge and wet wrapping method would be followed to strengthen and preserve the columns.

As the bearings of the bridge are damaged, special jacks would be used to raise the height of the bridge during the repair work.

his part of the work would be done only after completion of the Rangarajapuram flyover, as the work demands diversion of traffic. All the joints would be replaced by strip seal joints. The Rangarajapuram flyover is expected to be commissioned in January next year.

The foundation stone for the Kodambakkam bridge was laid in September 1963 and work was completed in September 1965.

A study commissioned by the civic body had recommended strengthening of the facility. Iron rods of the bridge were found exposed in many parts due to wear and tear.

During the study, it was also found that the expansion joints had weakened because of water seepage, which had to be arrested.

To facilitate the repair work the shops beneath the bridge would be vacated temporarily.

At least 100 shops would have to be relocated temporarily.
