Works under way to modernise maternity home in Coimbatore

Coimbatore: Seethalakshmi Maternity Home on Brooke Bond Road here is being modernised at Rs. 1 crore with the objective to turn it into a mini general hospital with special focus on maternity care.

P. Pynthamil Pari, Chairman, Coimbatore Corporation (South Zone), along with Assistant Commissioner A. Lakshmanan, Assistant Executive Engineer T. Gnanavel and Town Planning Committee Chairman Krishnamurthy inspected the works.

An area of 12,000 sq ft is being covered with works for the 6,092-ft ground floor already completed. First floor works were on.

The inspecting team directed the contractor to complete the works in ninety days.

Mr. Pari told journalists that the maternity home that had done enormous service was being revived in the last couple of years.

Now, the hospital will have the departments and equipment for treating all kinds of ailments.

At present, the strength of health staff in the maternity home was 24. There was a need for more gynaecologists, paediatricians and anaesthetists.

Mr. Pari said that the Deputy Chief Minister, who also holds the portfolio of Local Administration, would be approached for the facilities required at the maternity home.

Plea to buy sprayers, fogging machines for all wards

Tiruchi: Corporation Councillor O. R. Shriraman (CPI) has appealed to the Corporation authorities to purchase sprayers and fogging machines for all the 60 wards from the civic body fund and use them to check mosquito menace.

In a representation to the Corporation Commissioner, Mr. Shriraman, said that mosquito menace which was prevalent in all the 60 wards was the main cause for viral fever and other diseases.

He said 60 sprayers and an equal number of fogging machines should be purchased and used by the sanitary workers of the respective wards in order to eradicate mosquito menace. A resolution should be adopted in the Council in order to buy the machines as soon as possible for the benefit of the residents, he said in the representation.

TIRUNELVELI: The Corporation has procured a vehicle, costing about Rs. 14.95 lakh, to detect and repair leakage in drinking water pipelines.

Even as the residential areas in the peripheral regions within the corporation limits is steadily developing in the recent past, the quantum of drinking water being obtained from the infiltration wells sunk in the perennial Tamirabharani has not improved much.

The situation becomes worse whenever the civic body faces huge loss of water due to rupture in the age-old pipelines and subsequently, the supply of drinking water to the area concerned is affected severely for several days.

Consequently, the residents either come to the corporation office with empty pots in protest against the erratic supply of drinking water or stage road roko in their area itself with the councillor concerned leading the show.

To avoid such unpleasant situations to some extent in future, the corporation has purchased this vehicle equipped with modern gadgets can detect and repair leakages in the drinking water pipelines in the pumping stations, primary pipelines originating from the pumping stations, overhead and ground-level tanks and secondary distribution pipelines taking water to the consumers.

Moreover, the quantity of chlorine dissolved in the drinking water can be estimated. The equipment include microphone system with speaker, chloroscope, conductivity meter, pH meter, turbidity meter, vibrator and digital TDS. A skilled and an unskilled worker would be available to attend the problems.
