Corporation to buy road cleaning machines

Staff Reporter

Coimbatore Corporation is in the process of buying road cleaning machines to remove dust gathered along medians and roadsides. The Mayor said that the Corporation would go in for machines manufactured in Coimbatore as they would be cheaper and it need not worry about maintenance.

His decision was influenced by the civic body buying a machine a few years ago and suffering heavy expenditure on diesel and maintenance. Finally, the Corporation had to dump the machine.

The Mayor’s decision to buy the machines came after ward 56 councillor Lakshmi Ilanselvi raised the issue in the council meeting recently.

She said she had seen a couple of motorcycle riders meet with accidents after dust from medians hit their faces.

This was on Masakalipalayam Road. But it was also true of Trichy Road, Avinashi Road and all other roads in the city.

North Zone Chairman P. Rajkumar said that the machine the Corporation bought a few years ago was on the eve of the World Classical Tamil Conference.

Municipality approves plans to construct subways

Staff Reporter

Karur municipality on Tuesday stamped its approval on plans to construct subways at Kulathupalayam and Pasupathypalayam. The Kulathupalayam subway is estimated to cost Rs. 3.80 crore and the Pasupathypalayam subway Rs. 2.80 crore.

As for the Kulathupalayam plan, it was pointed out to the State government that the public were finding it difficult to cross the wall raised by the railways adjacent to the track in the area. Since accidents occurred in the region, people were demanding a subway to help them access the other side of the railway track.

With a plan for construction of a subway at an estimated cost of Rs. 3.80 crore, Karur municipal chairman on June 25 last had written to the Commissioner for Municipal Administration seeking sanction of funds for the subway. Earlier, as soon as the council assembled, women councillors tied rakhi to some of their male counterparts.

Bus stand for Thiruthangal soon

Special Correspondent

Residents of Thiruthangal, who have been dreaming for a bus stand of their own for the last 25 years, are likely to get one within a year. Though it has been upgraded as a municipality, Thiruthangal has remained a transit point. Efforts made by Minister for Information and Special Programme Implementation K.T. Rajendhira Balaji, Municipal Chairman Dhanalakshmi Ganesan, and Vice-Chairman P. Sakthivel have started yielding results.

An area of 1.5 acres on Sivakasi-Virudhunagar Main Road has been identified and it has been planned to construct the bus stand at a cost of Rs. 3.69 crore. The municipality is expected to share the expenditure and contribute a sum of Rs. 40 lakh while the rest is likely to be received from the State Government. Tenders will be floated in about two weeks and a gala function is proposed by this month end.
