Snap power, water to unauthorised buildings

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has directed the TN Electricity Board (TNEB) and the TN Water Supply & Drainage (TWAD) Board to disconnect on or before April 25, the power and water connections given to about 985 more unauthorised constructions in The Nilgiris district.

A division bench comprising Justice Elipe Dharma Rao and Justice KK Sasidharan gave the direction while passing further interim orders on the public interest writ petitions, which sought the demolition of 1,337 unauthorised constructions in Ooty, Gudalur, Kothagiri and Coonoor taluks.

The bench directed Ooty Municipality to furnish the list of the 985 unauthorised constructions to the Superintending Engineers (SEs) of the TNEB and the TWAD Board on or before April 22. The SP and the Municipality Commissioner should provide necessary assistance to carry out the direction.

The bench restrained the SEs from granting electricity and water connection to the buildings, which did not have the sanctioned plan and completion certificate.
