CHENNAI: The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) will take up maintenance and conservation of heritage buildings in Chennai, Slum Clearance and Accommodation Control Minister Suba Thangavelan told the Assembly on Thursday.

“Chennai has many heritage buildings with historical significance and architectural excellence. The list of buildings will be released and the CMDA will maintain them,” he said replying to the debate on demands for grants for his department.

The Minister said the government would implement a housing project under public-private partnership mode to meet requirements in the Chennai Metropolitan Area. The government will enter into an agreement with those who have more than 100 acres.

A separate zonal planning committee would be created for plans and plot approvals for buildings on East Coast Road, stretching from Neelankarai to Puducherry.

Development plans

The Minister said under the second master plan, development plans would be prepared in the current year for Villivakkam, Velachery, Ambattur, Nazarethpet and Perumbakkam.

Local bodies would give planning approval for buildings constructed within 4,000 sq ft outside the Chennai Metropolitan Area. A commercial complex will be constructed above the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) building at Koyambedu.
