Stress on water and energy conservation

Farmers appealed to adopt drip irrigation method to optimise energy consumption

TIRUCHI: There is a need to curtail energy and water wastage, and the farming community should adopt energy-efficient and water conservation measures, D. Napoleon, Executive Engineer, Agricultural Engineering Training Centre, Tamil Nadu, said here recently.

Use of drip irrigation not only conserves water but also reduces energy consumption, Mr. Napoleon said addressing farmers at a seminar on “enhancing energy efficiency by energy efficient motors” organised by the Technical Training & Development Centre of Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) Limited, Tiruchi.

Energy efficient motors distributed by the TANGEDCO plays a major role in bridging the gap between demand and supply, he said. F.X. Mary Magdalin Princy, Senior Manager, Technical Training & Development Centre, TANGEDCO, Tiruchi, said improved design, materials and manufacturing techniques enable energy-efficient motors to accomplish more work per unit of electricity consumed. These motors had longer insulation and bearing lives; lower heat output and less vibration. They were more tolerant of overload conditions and voltage fluctuations.

Ravichandran, faculty, TANGEDCO demonstrated the energy conservation models. Farmers from Cuddalore and Vriddhachalam took part in the programme. Handbooks containing details on the techniques of conserving energy; energy efficient motors and the safety aspects were distributed to all the participants, a release here said.
