Drinking water supply to be suspended on June 13 & 14

MADURAI: The Madurai Municipal Corporation will suspend drinking water supply to several parts within the city limits between June 13 and 14 for maintenance works of a drinking water pipeline from Vaigai reservoir.

The civic body has found out leaks in the main pipeline at various places in the stretch such as Poovampatti overhead tank, Kannapatti, Akkaraipettai, Nadakottai Mannadimangalam, Electric Tower, Vazhaithoppu, Kodimangalam and Tharapatti section. To rectify these leaks and prevent the wastage of drinking water, the repair works will be carried out on June 13 and 14 and the water supply will be suspended.

According to the official statement from the corporation, the water supply will be suspended in wards 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 19 and 20 of Zone 1 where drinking water is supplied through HMS Colony and Aruldaspuram Over Head Tanks (OHT); wards 27, 33 to 48 of Zone 2 supplied through Sellur, Race Course, AR Tank, Pudur Maruthankulam, Rajaji Park, Anna Nagar and KK Nagar OHTs; wards 61to 64 of Zone 3 supplied through Villapuram OHT; and wards 77 and 87 to 93 of Zone 4 supplied through Sundararajapuram OHT.

Corporation Commissioner R Nanthagopal stated that the water will not be supplied to these areas on June 13 and 14. The public are requested to render their cooperation for the task by storing sufficient water for those two days and use it sparingly, he said. However, corporation will also be deploying tanker lorries to those areas where drinking water need turns out to be critical in these days, he added.

Madurai city gets drinking through Vaigai reservoir from where the water is carried by pipelines after purification process in Anaikaraipatti near the dam. The water flows in huge pipeline through gravitational force.
