At last, Vedasandur gets protected drinking water

Staff Reporter

A five-decade-old struggle for protected drinking water by residents of Vedasandur has come to an end, thanks to the implementation of Cauvery Combined Drinking Water Scheme. With the implementation of the scheme, protected drinking water is being supplied from Thursday.

The TWAD Board officials stored water in two newly constructed tanks — each of one lakh litre capacity — at VOC Nagar and Kongu Nagar and supplied the water to residents in Vedasandur town on Thursday morning.

However, water could not be stored in a tank constructed at Martin Nagar, as it has come up on a private land, and a case is pending in court in this connection. Water supply will be made to all residents of the town in phases, said TWAD officials. On completion of the project, residents of Palayam, Oddanchatram, Sri Ramapuram and Kannivadi town panchayats too will get 70 litres of drinking water a day each and the people of 735 villages will get 40 litres of water a day each. A total of 3.5 lakh people will get protected drinking water under this scheme.

Three ground-level tanks and six overhead tanks and two pressure reduction tanks have been set up to streamline the supply. Eight pumps have been installed to carry water to the beneficiary villages.
