Augmentation of water supply: survey begins in city

A survey for preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for augmenting drinking water supply to the extended areas of Coimbatore Corporation commenced on Thursday.

The survey commenced from the overhead water tank of the civic body on Sarada Mill Road in Podanur, an added area of the city.

Minister for Agriculture S. Damodaran inaugurated the survey in the presence of Coimbatore Mayor S.M. Velusamy, Erode Mayor Mallika Paramasivam, Coimbatore Deputy Mayor S. Leelavathi Unni, Corporation Commissioner G. Latha and officials.

The detailed project report is to be prepared by Tamil Nadu Water Investment Corporation.

The project is to enhance the quantum of water supplied to residents in 14 wards i.e., for the wards 87 to 100.

At present, these wards were being provided with 15 million litres of water from the Siruvani and Aliyar comprehensive water supply scheme.

The detailed project report is being done to carry out a scheme to lay a pipeline from the Pilloor II drinking water supply scheme from Ukkadam via bypass road and link it with the overhead water tank on Sarada Mill Road in Podanur for providing additional six million litres of water for the 14 wards. Similarly, the report will also be for laying another pipeline for providing additional quantity of drinking water to residents of seven wards i.e., ward numbers 5,6,7,8,9 besides 16 and 17 from Kavundampalayam which are at present provided with 11 million litres of water per day from the Kavundampalayam — Vadavalli Comprehensive Water Supply scheme designed with Bhavani as the source.

These wards now come under the new scheme of the Corporation to provide round-the-clock water supply. The project will also include replacement of existing pipelines and for laying new pipelines.
