Four districts to benefit from Rs 717 crore water schemes

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, on Saturday, announced drinking water supply schemes for four districts in the State that is set to be implemented at a total cost of Rs 717.32 crore.

In order to ensure drinking water supply to 1,266 rural settlements in the panchayat unions of Vellaikoil, Moolanur, Tharaapuram, Kundam and Kangeyam in Tirupur, and Sennimalai in Erode, an integrated water supply scheme worth Rs 91.61 crore would be implemented with Cauveri water near Kodumudi as the source. An annual allocation of Rs 3.52 crore would be made for maintenance of the project, which will benefit 2.8 lakh people.

Likewise, a drinking water supply project in Thanjavur benefiting 1,153 settlements with Coleroon river water as source would be implemented at a cost of Rs 495.70 crore. A allocation of Rs 9.19 crore would be made for its maintenance. The project, covering three town panchayats and nine panchayat unions, will benefit 5.76 lakh people. Further, in Coimbatore, a project covering 7 town panchayats and 134 rural settlements in Thondamuthur will be implemented at a cost of Rs 130.46 crore with Bhavani river as the source.
