Special Correspondent

COIMBATORE: Teams from the health department of the Coimbatore Corporation seized on Monday 48,000 sachets of drinking water from a unit on Najundapuram Road, stating that the water was of sub-standard quality.

The officials who carried out the seizure said that totally 480 sacks containing water sachets were found in the unit.

Each sack contained 100 sachets of 250 ml of water. An official said raw water was not put through the required process to make it safe for drinking.

It was packed in the sachets and supplied to liquor shops with attached bars.

The date of packing and the date of expiry were not mentioned on the sachets. None of the guidelines of the Bureau of Indian Standards were followed, the official said.

The sale of unsafe water was in violation of the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, he said.

Samples of the water would be sent for tests to Chennai and the rest of the seized sachets would be destroyed.
