New drinking water scheme for Nagercoil

Staff Reporter

The Nagercoil Municipal Council has decided to implement a new drinking water scheme from Puthen dam near Perunchani.

A resolution was passed to this effect at the urgent Council meeting held here on Monday. Council chairperson M.Meena Dev presided over.

After considering the newly merged areas with Nagercoil municipality and to fulfil the drinking water needs of the residents, the government had earlier announced the Kuzhuthurai river combined drinking water scheme with the Tamirabharani as the source.

In this connection, the Council had also passed a resolution.

But later, during a survey taken by the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board, it was known that more than 40 drinking water projects were being implemented from the Tamirabharani. Also, the surplus water from the Tamirabharani was only 180 million cubic feet, but Nagercoil municipality drinking water scheme required 555 million cubic feet of water.

Therefore, the TWAD officials ruled out the possibilities of drawing water from the Tamirabharani.

Later, it was proposed to implement the drinking water scheme by setting up a well near Puthen check dam to cater to the needs of the residents of Nagercoil municipal areas.

The Council also passed a resolution to privatise scavenging works in 34 wards. The wards would be split into three zones and around 360 scavengers using tipper autos and lorries would remove the garbage.

The resolution would be sent to the Commissionerate of Municipal administration and after obtaining permission, the scheme would be implemented, said the chairperson.

Though the district witnessed copious rainfall, there was only 14.30 feet of water in Mukkadal dam.

Remove encroachments

This was attributed to the encroachments by estate owners on small streams, which obstructed the free flow of water into the dam. Hence the councillors demanded the removal of encroachments in and around the dam.

The chairperson assured them that the matter would be looked into immediately.

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Friday ordered the release of 180 MLD of water from Veeranam to the city from August 17, to quench the thirst of the water-starved metro.

In a statement here, the Chief Minister said storage at Veeranam lake had gone up to 935.2 million cubic feet following the release of water from Mettur dam since August 2. The water thus received, besides being used for irrigation, could cater to drinking water requirements of the State capital. With this in view, she had launched the New Veeranam Scheme in her earlier tenure in 2004.

Currently, the city has about 1,018 million cubic feet of water in all of its reservoirs combined.

The full capacity and the present storage in each of the four reservoirs are as follows: Poondi (3,231 mcft/260 mcft), Sholavaram (nil), Red Hills (3,300 mcft/413 mcft) and Chembarampakkam (3,645 mcft/496 mcft).

Meanwhile, Metro Water officials said the release of water from Veeranam would considerably ease the situation in the city.
