‘New drinking water schemes on the anvil’

Special Correspondent

The Thanjavur Municipality is taking all possible steps to provide drinking water to people without any problem, said Savithiri Gopal, Chairperson, Thanjavur Municipality, here on Wednesday.

Responding to complaints made by councillors that drinking water scarcity existed in some wards, Ms. Gopal said that borewells were sunk at various places to solve the problem.

Sun Ramanathan, DMK councillor, said alternate water projects should be taken up to meet the future needs of drinking water in the town. “Usually, Vennar will get water from Mettur in June. This year as there is no water in Vennar, drinking water scarcity is experienced in some wards. This should be solved,” he said.

To this, Ms. Gopal said that some new drinking water schemes are on the anvil. But as a temporary measure, municipal water lorries supplied drinking water. Compared to other Municipalities in Tamil Nadu, Thanjavur is better in providing drinking water.

Some councillors complained that there was leakage in the underground drainage system at many places. Sewage water was overflowing and causing pollution.

The Chairperson said that Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board had been maintaining the underground drainage in Thanjavur. It was yet to hand over the maintenance to municipality. But the municipality is taking steps to attend to problems in the system and correct them.

Ms. Gopal appealed to the people not to dump waste soil in the drainage system which leads to plugging of the pipelines and thus resulting in leakage.

Nearly 7,500 homes in Nolambur and Karambakkam will be getting pipe water under the Rs 452.77 crore Comprehensive Water Supply and Sewerage Scheme, implemented in the newly added areas of Chennai Corporation, in the next two years.

Metro Water sources said that Nolambur and Karambakkam were part of the nine areas where the comprehensive water schemes will be implemented in the next two years. Other areas, which will be covered under the scheme, included Injambakkam, Sholinganallur, Karapakkam, Ramapuram, Okkium-Thoraipakkam, Nandambakkam and Manapakkam.

Under the scheme in Nolambur, plans are on to provide water connections to 2,959 houses. Currently, the existing water supply system in Nolambur is maintained by extracting water from nine wells as well as few deep bore wells at the rate of 40 litres per capita per day (lpcd).

“The proposal involves providing feeder main and distribution system, using ductile iron pipes ranging from 1000 millimeter to 450 millimeter size for a total length of 40,279 metres and construction of overhead tank with 18 lakh litre capacity,” a Metro Water spokesman said.

In Karambakkam, it is proposed to provide 4,568 service connections by constructing an overhead tank with the capacity of 25 lakh litres and underground tank with five lakh litres.

Currently, water is supplied through these areas by extracting ground water from various borewells at the rate of 95lpcd.

“The total estimated cost for Nolambur and Karambakkam projects is Rs 38.56 crore and it would benefit nearly 50,000 residents,” the Metro Water spokesman said.

Similarly, under the project, the government is also planning to implement sewerage scheme that will cover Kathivakkam, Sholinganallur, Karapakkam and Ramapuram.

The funds are part of the state government sanctioned Rs 879.78 crore for implementing the works proposed by Chennai Corporation and Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board under the Chennai Mega City Development Mission (CMCDM).
