Kancheepuram Municipality Chairman Mythili Thirunavukkarasu has announced that a new drinking water source will be set up in Thenambakkam area to augment supply.

She was addressing the first meeting of the recently elected Council, on the Municipality premises on Tuesday.

Drinking water supply needs of the Municipality were being met now by drawing water from Thiruparkadal head-works situated in Vellore district and the Orikkai head-works situated on the southern outskirts of the town. Both these head-works were sunk on the Palar riverbed.

When she made this announcement, the ward 4 councillor Abusali of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam requested the civic body to ensure that water drawn from new source be supplied to the entire municipal area.

Deck for temple car

In another resolution, the civic body agreed to hand over 1,985 square-foot ‘Ayyasamy' park in ward number 4 to Sri Ekambareswarar temple for setting up a deck to park the temple car. It has also been decided to forward proposal in this regard to the State Government for its consent.

When a resolution pertaining to procurement of jetting-cum-suction machine and two de-silting machines at a cost of Rs.41 lakh and allocating Rs.14 lakh from the general fund for maintenance of the same through the contractor was taken up, the ward 37 councillor, M.Udhayakumar of DMK suggested that trained hands be absorbed as permanent staff to handle these machines instead of paying the contractor heavily.

He had also claimed that he had received information that diesel and oil expenses of a similar machine already owned by civic body were being met by the Municipality though a contractor had been engaged for operation and maintenance and he was liable to take care of these expenses.

Responding to his allegation, the Chairman said such ‘malpractices' would not be allowed to take place now.

When Mr.Udhayakumar insisted that the annual operation and maintenance portion of the resolution be set aside as it would help recruit new hands, the Commissioner, S.Mohan, said nothing could be done in this regard as this scheme drawn up the previous government envisaged handing over of operation and maintenance of the service to the private party.

A detailed project report (DPR) on Erode Corporation's ambitious Uratchikootai dedicated water supply scheme is likely to be finalised by the end of this month.

The civic body aims to implement the scheme at an estimated cost of Rs. 300 crore.

Mayor Mallika Paramasivam has expressed confidence that the State Government will give its nod to the project immediately after the submission of the DPR and allot the required funds. Chennai-based Tamil Nadu Water Investment Company, consultant for the project, is preparing the DPR.

“The scheme is important for the Corporation as new areas have been added to its limits recently.

The civic body will not be able to meet the water requirements of the people with the existing schemes.

The civic body has to implement the new dedicated scheme to ensure adequate supply of water to all the residents in the Corporation limits,” says Ms. Paramasivam.

Limits

The new Corporation limits includes Surampatty, Periya Semur, Veerappan Chatram and Kasipalayam municipalities, BP Agraharam and Suriyampalayam town panchayats and Thindal, Villarasampatti, Ellapalayam, Gangapuram and Muthampalayam village panchayats.

New localities added to the Chennai Corporation will soon get Metrowater's supply through tankers. The water agency has invited applications from lorry owners to operate trips in the merged areas.

Officials of Metrowater said about 50 lorries would be operated to meet the immediate requirement in the 42 local bodies that were brought under the Corporation limits. To start with nearly five million litres of water per day (mld) would be supplied through water tankers.

“We have identified nearly 15 locations for creating filling points for these tankers. It will be more of a cluster approach in creating filling points and not every area would have one. About 320 street tanks would also be installed in the new wards,” said an official. The mobile water supply is expected to begin within a month.

At present, Metrowater operates 285 lorries to supply nearly 15 mld of water. The vehicles make about 1,200 trips daily.

Local water bodies and groundwater meet nearly 55 per cent of the water requirements of the residents of the areas brought under the Corporation. It was found that some of the erstwhile village panchayats received 60 litres per capita per day (lpcd), much lower than the recommended 135 lpcd.

Metrowater would retain the infrastructure available in the merged areas and add facilities required. Many of them have overhead tanks and priority is being given to complete detailed project reports to cover the localities that are yet to be provided with water supply or sewerage schemes, the official added.

The water agency would also operate 20 lorries for sewage disposal in places that do not have sewer lines. As the process of identifying additional infrastructure to locate buildings is still under way, the officials would temporarily work in the same premises with Corporation staff members.

Consultants

Metrowater is also in the process of appointing a consultant to survey the liabilities and assets of the erstwhile local bodies and for accounting records. This would be completed in three or four months.
