Jayalalithaa to open Amma canteens at four more Chennai hospitals

Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa will inaugurate Amma canteens
on the premises of four hospitals in Chennai on Monday.
The
chief minister will inaugurate the canteens at Kasturba Gandhi Hospital
for Women and Children in Triplicane, RSRM Hospital in Royapuram,
Kilpauk Medical College and Royapettah Government Hospital. She is
expected to visit the canteen at the Kasturba Gandhi Hospital. The chief
minister will inaugurate the three other canteens through video
conferencing.
Amma canteens are already functioning at the
Government General Hospital (GH), Government Stanley Medical College
Hospital and Institute of Child Health (ICH). These canteens provide
hygienic food at affordable prices. For breakfast one can have an idli
for Re 1 while a plate of pongal will cost Rs 3. For lunch, a plate of
curd rice is available at Rs 3. Sambar rice, lemon rice and curry leaves
rice are priced at Rs 5. Roti and dal are provided during dinner. A
plate of two rotis and dal are priced at Rs 3.
Each of the 200
wards of the Chennai Corporation has an Amma canteen. Thousands of
people, including daily labourers, drivers, migrant workers and
office-goers are regular customers of these canteens.
It may be
recalled that a delegation from Egypt visited the canteen at the GH
recently to study the logistics involved. Representatives of civic
bodies in Delhi, Hyderabad, Jaipur and Chandigarh also visited the
canteen and expressed the desire to implement the scheme in those
cities.
