GHMC to implement Integrated Solid Waste Management (SWM) project under PPP mode
HYDERABAD: GHMC has been selected as the ‘Best City for Improvement in Solid Waste Management’ under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) for the year 2009-10.
Union Minister for Finance Pranab Mukherjee will present the award to Mayor B. Karthika Reddy during the JNNURM national conference on Dec.3 in New Delhi. The award carries a trophy and cash award.
Ms. Reddy said the GHMC was selected for the award in compliance with the Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Rules, 2000, as GHMC has decided to implement the Integrated Solid Waste Management (SWM) project under Public Private Partnership mode under Design, Build, Operate and Transfer (DBOT) mechanism.
Other than collection and transporting garbage to dump yards, the three existing transfer stations are to be upgraded, five new transfer stations are to be built, four integrated waste management facilities developed and existing dump sites would be reclaimed and reused.
Environment Protection, Training and Research Institute (EPTRI) is the independent engineer for the project being taken up by Ramky, said Ms. Reddy. Having began the capital works for treatment and disposal of waste, the firm will be given collection and transportation in East and West Zones in three months.
While the government had sanctioned 723 acres at Malkapur village (Nalgonda dist), land is being scoured for new transfer stations.
