Kharar MC head quits

kharar: Finally, Kharar Municipal Council (MC) president Sukhwant Singh has resigned from his post. Earlier, he had offered to quit after temporarily stepping down twice from his post in the past 18 months, Citing “ill health”, the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader sent his resignation letter to MC Executive Officer.In his communication, Sukhwant, who is younger brother of Independent MLA from Chamkaur Sahib Charanjit Singh, has written that due to his “ill health”, he was unable to discharge his duties, following which the official work was suffering.
Accepting the MC chief’s resignation at a special meeting chaired by the acting MC president Himmat Singh here today, the MC House forwarded the same to the Director, Local Government, Punjab, for formal acceptance and copy to Mohali Deputy Commissioner for fixing the date for electing new MC chief.
Except Sukhwant and his councillor wife Paramjeet Kaur, rest all 13 councillors attended the meeting.
In February, Sukhwant had for the second time vacated his post by delegating his power to MC senior vice-president Himmat Singh, who was presently working as acting civic chief. Earlier in June 2009, then MC senior vice-president Roshan Lal was made acting MC chief.
Sukhwant and his wife Paramjeet Kaur were among 10 councillors, which the ruling SAD-BJP combine had owned, after the general civic polls in 2008. While 3 councillors were independents, 2 owed allegiance to the Congress party.
On his first day in office on November 25, 2008, after being elected as MC chief on November 6, 2008, Sukhwant had faced revolt from 8 of total 15 councillors
