Kharar: Kharar Municipal Council (MC) will elect its new president on Wednesday. Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Rajeev Kumar Gupta on Monday asked MC Executive Officer (EO) Girish Kumar Verma to call a special MC house meeting on September 1 at 3.30 pm to conduct the election.Confirming the development, SDM, who was appointed convener for holding the election by the District Magistrate Parveen Kumar, told Newsline that the election will be conducted either by show of hands or secret ballot, as desired by the present municipal councillors, in case no unanimous choice was made.
With the notification for the election date, hectic lobbying has begun for the top civic post as several aspirants have intensified their efforts to woo their fellow councillors and win over their political mentors.
It was on June 7 when Sukhwant Singh had resigned from the MC chief’s post, citing “ill health” and his resignation was accepted by the MC house on June 9 and sent to the Director, Local Government, Punjab, for formal acceptance.
In his communication, Sukhwant, who is younger brother of Independent MLA from Chamkaur Sahib Charanjit Singh, had written that due to his “ill health”, he was unable to discharge his duties, following which the official work was suffering.
Before finally stepping down, Sukhwant had for the second time in February vacated his post by delegating his power to MC senior vice-president Himmat Singh, who was presently working as acting civic chief. Earlier in June 2009, then MC senior vice-president Roshan Lal was made the acting MC chief.
Sukhwant and his wife Paramjeet Kaur were among 10 councillors, which the ruling SAD-BJP combine had owned, after the general civic polls in 2008. While three councillors were independents, two owed allegiance to the Congress.
