Khathas: Residents resort to GandhigiriBengaluru, Nov. 15: About 120 residents of Sachidanandanagar in the city, who had to resort to Gandhigiri to secure khathas for their property, were forced to wait till Monday night to actually get the certificates. Sachidanandanagar is situated in Rajarajeshwarinagar ward.
The khatha certificates are an endorsement of their ownership of the property. On Monday, members of Sachidanandanagar welfare association and Sachidananada Nagar Nyayapara Andolana, gathered at the BBMP office in RR Nagar hoping to get the khatha certificates. Confusion reigned supreme after an alleged goon from the same area, demanded that he also be given a khatha. Finally, all 120 khata aspirants had to wait through the whole night. BBMP commissioner Siddaiah has directed the BBMP zonal joint commissioner to issue the khatas by Monday midnight.
The residents have been fighting for the khatas since April 2005 when the city civil court directed BBMP to issue the khatas to them. This was followed by a Lokayukta directive to BBMP to follow the court order. Shankara Prasad, who is leading the association, said that a person from the same area created a tense situation by demanding a khatha for himself which did not have any legal validity. Following the incident, six policemen were posted to the office to ensure security.
