Kolkata Mayor resigns as chairman of waterworks panel
Kolkata: Alleging non-cooperation, Mayor of the Trinamool
Congress-run Kolkata Municipal Corporation Sobhan Chatterjee resigned on
Wednesday as chairman of the advisory committee of the Garden Reach
Waterworks run by the State Government-run Kolkata Municipal Water and
Sanitation Authority (KMWSA).
‘Non-cooperation’
“I have already faxed my resignation to Municipal Affairs Minister
Asok Bhattacharya,” the Mayor said alleging non-cooperation in
augmenting drinking water supply to South Kolkata from the Garden Reach
Waterworks.
The Mayor said water supply had dropped from 120 million gallon per
day to 80 million gallon causing a water crisis in several areas of
South Kolkata.
Management
Mr. Chatterjee said the West Bengal Government had rejected his
repeated pleas for handing over management of the waterworks to the
civic body.
He said the Kolkata Municipal Corporation had sanctioned funds for
purchase of pumps for the waterworks and promised to release fresh fund,
but the State Government did not heed it. – PTI.
