KOLLAM: In the local body elections to be held on October 23, voters in Kollam district will elect 1,610 representatives. The break up being 1,274 representatives at the grama panchayats, 153 to the block panchayats, 55 to the Kollam Corporation, 26 to the district panchayat and 102 to the three municipal councils.
In the 2005 elections, there were 71 grama panchayats in the district. But this time there are only 70. Yet the number of grama panchayat wards in the district increased by 70 compared to the figure last time. This increase was caused by the delimitation process. Each panchayat got an extra ward.
One grama panchayat was reduced when Karunagapally became a municipality. In 2005, there were 13 block panchayats. This time there are only 11. Two blocks that have ceased to exist are Karunagapally and Anchalumoodu.
In 2005, the 13 bock panchayats together had 163 wards and this has now dropped to 153. The last district panchayat had 27 divisions, but this time it is only 26. In the Punalur municipal council, the number of wards increased from 32 in 2005 to 35 this time, and in the Paravur municipality from 29 in 2005 to 32 this time. The new Karunagapally municipality will have 35 wards.
