Lab fined for improper disposal of biomedical waste
The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike’s (BBMP) health
officials have levied a fine of Rs.10,000 on Medi CT Scan and
Diagnostics on Margosa Road for dumping biomedical waste improperly.
The
BBMP had directed medical institutions, including labs, nursing homes
and hospitals, to handle their biomedical waste separately and not mix
it with the municipal solid waste.
According to the
Biomedical Waste (Management and Handling) Rules 1998, hospitals,
nursing homes and clinics must segregate the waste and hand it over to
specified firms to be treated. Citizens have also been urged to
scientifically dispose of medical waste to check the spread of dreaded
infections and diseases, including hepatitis B and C. They can seek the
help of voluntary organisations, resident welfare associations, Maridi
and Ramky.
A few months ago, the BBMP had levied a
fine of Rs.10 lakh on Mallige Medical Centre and ordered its trade
licence to be cancelled for dumping biomedical waste in a vacant plot.
