Laser fountain: Niwas seeks explanation from MC

Chandigarh: UT Home Secretary Ram Niwas has asked the Municipal Corporation for an explanation on the installation of the mega laser fountain in Sector 17. This was demanded following a complaint by councillors of BJP and Akali Dal about the excessive expenditure being incurred on the fountain.In their complaint, the councillors had stated the cost of installation at Rs 3.75 crore was quite high and the fountain could be installed at a much lesser cost. The councillors have suggested that one of the study tours be sent South particularly to such places where such laser fountains are successfully installed at very low costs so that this wastage of tax payer’s money is stopped. A similar fountain in Kerala has been installed at a cost of Rs 45 lakh. The fountain if installed should be given on BOT basis.
After receiving the complaint the Home Secretary who is also the Secretary Local Bodies has asked the civic body to give its reply. While the reply is being prepared, officials state that the expenditure is justified according to the equipment being installed.
