Mayor calls for inquiry into role of civic agencies
NEW DELHI: With the Games behind them, the civic bodies say if any corruption charges surface in relation to their Commonwealth Games-related projects, strict action will be initiated against officials responsible for the project.
Said Delhi mayor, P R Sawnhey: ”There should be an enquiry into these projects. With everyone raising questions about the money spent on the Games, I feel the public has a right to know where their money was spent. On our part, we have answered to all Central Vigilance Commission queries related to our projects and should not face any more enquiries in relation to our work done during the Games.”
The mayor was, however, clear that if any MCD official was found to be guilty of any lapses, strict action would be initiated against the person.
According to works committee chairman Jagdish Magmain, MCD has suspended six officials related to the streetlight project, after the CVC found the bid documents had been tampered with. Other projects of MCD, that were under the CVC scanner include covering of Sunehari and Kushak Nallahs and construction of railway underbridge at Prem Nagar. Said Magmain: ”As politicians, we do not understand the technical aspects of various projects and an enquiry is necessary to see whether quality standards were adhered to. Various aspects could have been overlooked in a hurry and should not be ignored. The contractors in such cases should be blacklisted and officials should also be punished. On our part, we had suspended six officials related to the streetlighting project and transferred officials who were delaying them.”
According to NDMC council member Mukesh Bhatt: ”An enquiry should take place to have a clearer understanding of things.” According to officials, the CP redevelopment plan and Shivaji Stadium not having being completed on time, might be inquired into.
