Mayor, Dy Mayor to be selected through direct pollsPNS | Shimla
The Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) and presidents and vice-presidents of about 48 odd municipal councils and city civic bodies in Himachal Pradesh would henceforth be elected through direct electioneering, a notification released here on Saturday said.
The State Election Commissioner, Dev Swaroop passed a notification to this effect. In order to discourage horse-trading to elect the heads of local self-government bodies, the State Government had earlier issued an ordinance to make provision for direct elections for these posts, which is expected to be cleared by the State assembly in the coming winter session.
It would be for the first time that the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of SMC and president and vice-presidents of other bodies would be elected directly for a full term. Earlier, the elections for these posts were held through indirect voting by the elected councillors and members.
