The elections of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Mayor
will be held on September 4, stated the notification issued by the
Regional Commissioner.
Along with the Mayor, the Deputy Mayor and 12 standing committee chairpersons will be elected the same day.
The
Karnataka High Court recently ruled that the fourth BBMP Mayor will be a
man from the general category and the Deputy Mayor a woman from the ST
category. Lobbying for the Mayor’s post began a few weeks ago. The
Deputy Mayor is likely to be Indira since she is the only woman in the
ST category in the Council.
Mayor D Venkatesh Murthy’s term ended
on April 26. However, the Congress councillors filed a case in the high
court with regard to the BJP notification that changed the category of
mayor’s post from ST female to general. The court upheld this, but
stated that the Deputy Mayor should be a woman from the ST category.
