Mayor quota: Court rejects petition
BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Thursday disposed a public interest litigation (PIL) which had sought directions to the state government to reserve the posts of Bangalore’s mayor and deputy mayor for Backward Class (A) and General categories.
Disposing the petition filed by H C Shivanna and the Karnataka Pradesh Kurubara Sangha, the division bench comprising Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice Mohanshanthan Gouder suggested the petitioner to file an election petition and seek remedy.
On February 15, the state government had reserved the posts of mayor and deputy mayor for Backward Class (A) and General category respectively. Later it changed the notification, reserving the mayor’s post for General category and deputy mayor’s post for Scheduled Caste. The government’s decision to bring changes to the reservation for the posts of mayor and deputy mayor was illegal, the petitioners argued before the court.
However, the bench disposed the petition by accepting the government’s contention on fixing reservation on a rotational basis.
