Commissioners of Tirunelveli, Tuticorin administer oath to Bhuvaneshwari and Antony Grace
E. Bhuvaneshwari, who was elected unopposed as the fifth
Mayor of Tirunelveli Corporation, assumed office here on Wednesday.
Commissioner R. Lakshmi administered the oath to Ms. Bhuvaneshwari in
the presence of Collector M. Karunakaran, MPs S. Muthukaruppan, Vijila
Sathyananth, K.R.P. Prabhakaran, Deputy Mayor P. Jeganathan alias
Ganesan, Tamil Nadu Housing Board chairman R. Murugaiah Pandian, former
Mayor A. Jayarani, councillors and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra
Kazhagam (AIADMK) office-bearers at the Corporation Council Hall.
Standing
with folded hands for a couple of minutes in front of Chief Minister
Jayalalithaa’s portrait hanging behind the Mayor’s chair in the hall,
Ms. Bhuvaneshwari paid her respects before putting her first signature
in the papers.
After Ms. Vijila was nominated as
AIADMK’s Rajya Sabha member, the mayor post fell vacant in January.
Though it was expected that the by-election to fill the post would be a
cakewalk for the ruling party which had just registered its thumping
victory in the Lok Sabha polls in May, Ms. Bhuvaneshwari was elected
unopposed since Bharatiya Janata Party candidate G.P.R. Vellaiyammal
withdrew her nomination, much to the shock of her party colleagues and
joined the AIADMK in the presence of party supremo Jayalalithaa.
Tuticorin
In

oath to A.P.R. Antony Grace and handed over the ceremonial sceptre to
her in the presence of MP Sasikala Pushpa, MLAs S.T. Chellapandian,
‘Kadambur’ Raju and Deputy Mayor P. Xavier.
