Mayors Council ready to seek legal help
LUCKNOW: UP Mayors Council will seek legal redressal against state government decision to ban participation of political parties in local bodies elections. Talking to TOI, mayor Dinesh Sharma said he is trying to garner support on the issue cutting across the party lines. This is an issue which has evoked sharp reaction from all political parties so it will be a joint venture with support from all, he said.
The move by the UP government, he said, was a direct contravention of the constitutional rights. If Mayawati is allowed to have her way, UP will earn the dubious distinction of being the first state where political parties would be out of the ring during the election time since 1947. It would be a record of its kind which will bring us shame and therefore we have decided not to take it lying down, mayor said.
I am going to try all options – legal, political, public and apolitical to see that the government does not succeed in its draconian designs, Sharma said. The council, he said, will go to the high court to get justice. First, we will urge the chief minister to take back the order and restore public faith in democratic procedure. We will also petition the governor and the president to intervene and make the CM see reason, failing which the council will seek justice from law court, Sharma said.
