MC library to shift from Gill Rd to Guru Nanak Bhawan
LUDHIANA: The municipal corporation is mulling over the idea to shift their main library from near its Zone C office on Gill Road to Guru Nanak Bhawan on Ferozepur Road for reaching out to more book lovers.
The corporation officials are running three libraries in the city but these are very less frequented. The library is situated near the corporation’s Zone C office in the area that house industrial units. Hence, the officials have proposed to shift the library and paid Rs 48 lakh to Guru Nanak Bhawan authorities. But some issues pertaining to lease are yet to be settled.
The footfall at the three libraries situated near its Zone C office, at Nehru Rose Garden and Children Park, Model Town, according to the records of the corporation, is only 150. Though these house over 24,000 books, the authorities have not purchased new books from the last two years despite the fact that corporation authorities allocate a sizeable amount every year for the libraries.
Sources say authorities have been paying Rs 2.67 lakh every month to the around 18 employees in these libraries. But the authorities do not care to update the books in libraries, resulting in poor response from the public. Moreover, the officers cite public’s interest in internet or television as the reason for dismal readership.
Senior deputy mayor Parveen Bansal says they have to shift the library in Guru Nanak Bhawan to target more readers. Reading habit should be inculcated among them. They were trying to complete the formalities as soon as possible, he added.
