MCD accused of favouring NGO
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has allegedly allowed a
non-government organisation to run its activities from a community
centre despite opposition by local area councillor and former Delhi
Mayor Arti Mehra.
The matter was brought to the notice of the MCD House
when independent councillor from Chhatarpur Chandra Kiran Tyagi on
Monday claimed that he was being pressurised to grant the space to an
NGO run by a former IPS officer.
According to the councillor, it is a clear violation of rules.
“The recommendation of the local councillor is required
for the purpose but that was not obtained. Action should be taken
immediately and the community centre should be vacated,” he added.
Mr. Tyagi also claimed to have written to Arti Mehra
several times but she claimed that she could not do anything as she too
was “under pressure”.
Mr. Tyagi also sought reply from Municipal Commissioner K. S. Mehra and Delhi Mayor Prithvi Raj Sahwney on the issue.
He alleged that Mr Sawhney had also asked him to give
his consent to allow NGO to function from the premises of the community
centre.
“Since 2008, the NGO run by a former Joint Commissioner of Police has been permitted to operate from the area,” he added.
Leader of Opposition Jai Kishan Sharma also joined in
and urged the Mayor to issue an order for eviction of the NGO with
immediate effect. Later on, Municipal Commissioner assured the House
that appropriate action would be taken.
