MCD bid to start waste mgmt project
Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is making efforts to start the long
pending Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Management Project.
However, though the project has received verbal approval from the
Central Government, it has yet to receive the clearance on paper which
is causing some delay in the execution of this project.
The project would not only help in resolving the waste management
issues but also make the environment clean, claimed Dehradun Mayor
Vinod Chamoli.
Although the project has not received any final nod from the central
government, Chamoli hopes that the project will be completed by May
2014.
Environment officer under the Project Implemented Unit (PIU) of JNNURM,
Dr Pankaj Bhatt said that this project would be beneficial in many
aspects as it would solve the major waste disposal issues in the city.
He added that at present there exists only one trenching ground in the
city at Sahastradhara road which has already crossed its maximum
capacity two years ago.
Disclosing the progress report of the solid waste management project,
said that the work for the first phase of the project, which includes
door to door garbage collection, was started two years back by the Doon
Valley Waste Management company.
He added that a total of 101065.81 metric tonnes of garbage was
collected from August 2011 to September 2013 from 60 municipal wards of
the city.
Notably, the Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Management Project under
the Urban Infrastructure and Governance submission of JNNURM was
approved with a budget of `24.6 crore in which 80 per cent is to be
given by Central Government and 20 per cent by the State Government.
The project will include segregation, primary collection, street
sweeping, secondary storage, transportation, treatment and recycling and
disposal of waste.
The Mayor informed that earlier this project was completely rejected by
the central government due to the presence of water bodies in the
designated area at Sheeshambada.
He said that later a verbal approval was received but the project would
only be kicked off after receiving the written approval of the Central
Government.
Shedding light on the main procedure of the project, Chamoli said that
the project is proposed to start in mainly in three phases.
Door to door collection of garbage is part of the first phase. Secondly
a composting plant would be established and a scientific landfill would
be made in the third phase.
He added that first phase work has already been started. Door to
collection is being done from last two years in the city and the work of
the second and third phase will start only after MCD receives the
written approval from the Central Government.
