NEW DELHI: In a major exercise aimed at facilitating two-way traffic
between Jhandewalan and Rajiv Chowk metro stations, the Municipal
Corporation of Delhi removed 180 shops on Panchkuian Road here on Sunday
after shopkeepers refused to vacate the premises and move to
alternative sites.
The 12-metre-wide shops constructed over a length of about 1.5
kilometres included 75 shops allotted under tehbazari and 25 shops
allotted by the Land and Estate Department of the civic body. The
removal action was implemented under the supervision of Deputy
Commissioner of Sadar Paharganj Zone Renu Krishnan Jagdev. The civic
body staff was assisted by about four companies of the Delhi Police.
According to the civic body, as an alternative, occupiers of these
shops had been allotted shops at a market constructed by the DMRC at
Bhai Veer Singh Marg near Gole Market. However, the shopkeepers had not
vacated the shops despite allotment.
MCD spokesperson Deep Mathur said: “The occupants had approached
various courts.Following the recent vacation of all the stay orders, the
MCD swung into action and removed the shops.”
