MCD rounds up stray dogs from Village
NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi ( MCD) has started a drive to round up stray dogs from in and around the Commonwealth Games Village. The Delhi government claims that nearly 50 dogs have been relocated temporarily to a dog sterilization centre at Ghazipur and an NGO-run shelter near Defence Colony. Similar drives will be carried out at other Games venues.
Once the Games are over, the dogs will be released in the same area. As per the rules pertaining to cruelty against animals, no dogs can be removed from their natural environment. They can be only taken away by state-appointed NGOs for sterilization and then they have to be released in the same area.
Following complaints that dogs were straying into the Games Village complex, MCD’s veterinary department swung into action and rounded up canines that came from a railway line in the vicinity.
Gautam Grover from Friendicoes and NGO working with stray animals said that due to reports of dogs straying into the Village complex, it was decided that these dogs would be temporarily removed from the site. “Dogs from Civil Lines and other Games venues will also be picked up. We decided to take up this task to ensure that the dogs are not harmed in the name of the Games,” he added.
“Each dog is being allotted a token so that it will be easy to identify where it belongs to so that it can be released at its old location later,” he added.
