New Delhi: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), which was struggling to come up with a tangible plan to remove loose overhead cables in the Walled City, has finally decided to take some concrete steps in that direction and clean up the Daryaganj area before the upcoming Games. The decision was made after Delhi Finance Minister A K Walia, who conducted an inspection of the area recently, urged the officials concerned to place potentially-dangerous overhead cables underground and ensure that at least Daryaganj looks “presentable”.
An extensive tangle of overhead high tension electric wires and television cables plagues the Walled City, constantly raising voices of concern from civic bodies as well as residents of Old Delhi. MCD now claims that it has already begun digging work, and would bury the cables underground by the end of this month.
To start with, the authorities would take care of the cables hanging overhead from Delhi Gate to the foot overbridge on Netaji Subhash Marg for an approximate amount of Rs 404 lakh (excluding the cost of digging trenches). The work would be taken up by BSES Yamuna Power Limited.
Streetlight and road restoration work would be carried out once the cables are taken underground.
