‘Numbering of houses will help us have a proper census of population’
NEW DELHI: As per the intimation of the Union Home Affairs Ministry to conduct the Census of India 2011, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi is all set to start numbering of newly developed colonies and houses in the Capital. However, there is no plan to alter the existing numbering system or addresses of the colonies.
As per the Union Home Ministry, the Census of India 2011 is to be conducted in Delhi in two phases and under this house listing will be carried out in May 2010.
To facilitate this census, the civic body has to carry out numbering of household properties next week. This entire exercise is expected to be completed in about a month’s time.
Junior engineers of various wards of the civic agency will carry out the numbering of houses.
Property tax
A civic body official said: “The process will start by January and is likely to be completed in the next one month. The move is to ensure that the newly developed colonies and houses in the city are assigned a number.”
According to the MCD, the step would also ensure better administration in these areas and help in collection of property tax too.
The civic body official said: “Accurate numbering of houses will help us have a proper census of population covered in different zones of the MCD and estimate the infrastructure required for better administration. It will also help us in getting more people under the tax net. At present, only eight lakh properties pay the taxes and over 22 lakh registered properties don’t.”
