The meeting that began at 11 am was disrupted by the Opposition demanding the postponement of the member election by at least one day. They said that the councillors were not informed by the Election Commission or by the returning officer about the election to the Committees. BJP parliamentary party leader P Ashok Kumar said that the new councillors were unaware of the procedures, which was a big fault on the part of the official concerned. Congress leader K Maheswaran Nair also said that the elections should be postponed.

 Finally, Mayor K Chandrika pleaded with the Council to let the selection of the members happen with consensus. To which the Opposition relented.

 The 99 members (the Mayor is not a member in any committee) had on Thursday submitted their nominations to the various committees. The nominations in the order of Standing Committees (as listed by the Election Commission guidelines) were read out and the members declared elected. While Finance, Development and Welfare committees have 13 members each, the other five committees have 12 members each.
